Tips from Emerson

Suggestions for types of plants appropriate to a Middle School Garden curriculum.

Tips from Emerson's Garden Team

Plant crops that don’t need much care during the summer, but can be harvested and worked with during the school year. For example, grain crops dry out in the summer, and therefore don’t require much water. They can be harvested in the fall and used for cooking and other lessons. Corn is one of these plants, and is very flexible in that it can connects in diverse ways to the curriculum.

Thematic gardens are easy for students and adults to identify and work with. Themes can be built around certain types of crops, subject matter, particulars cultures or time periods. Emerson’s Medieval Garden has been a great project for students and teachers alike.
